What is a Cervico-Facial Lift?

The cervico-facial lift (or face and neck lift) aims to tighten both the skin and underlying muscles in the face and neck (Deep plane face lift) for a refreshed, natural result. The technique involves incisions hidden in the hairline and around the ears. For patients under 50, we often use shorter incisions limited to the scalp—mini-facelifts with no visible scars.

During the procedure, the neck muscles (which contribute to sagging or “turkey neck”) are repositioned backward to redefine the angle between the neck and jawline. Excess skin is then removed and sutured discreetly.

At the end of the surgery, complementary procedures such as eyelid surgery or fat grafting (lipofilling) can also be performed.

The Procedure in Practice

We generally perform cervico-facial lifts under neuroleptanalgesia—local anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation—although general anesthesia is also an option. A pre-operative consultation with an anesthesiologist is required at least 48 hours beforehand. If you have a history of high blood pressure, a cardiology assessment may also be recommended.

Most patients go home the same day (8 a.m. admission, 7 p.m. discharge). However, you may opt to stay one night at the clinic for added comfort.

The procedure is not painful, but moderate facial swelling (edema) may occur for 3 to 7 days. We recommend 2 to 4 sessions of lymphatic drainage with a specialist physiotherapist post-operatively to reduce swelling.

We routinely perform Botox injections 15 days prior to surgery to relax facial muscles and allow for more precise tension adjustments during the facelift.

What Does a Facelift Address?

Facelifts are a common cosmetic procedure aimed at rejuvenating the facial appearance. They are particularly effective in correcting:

• Sagging cheeks
• Loose skin along the jawline
• Deep nasolabial folds
• Sagging neck skin and excess fat (when combined with a neck lift)

However, a facelift doesn’t treat fine wrinkles or sun damage, which can be addressed through aesthetic medicine (e.g., dermal fillers, botulinum toxin).

Preparing for Surgery

Preoperative Consultation

This includes:

• Discussing your goals with your surgeon
• Reviewing your health history and current medications
• Taking photographs for planning
• Assessing facial anatomy and skin quality

Before the Operation

• Stop any blood-thinning medications or supplements two weeks prior
• Quit smoking at least a month before
• Wash with a germicidal soap on the morning of surgery
• Do not eat after midnight before the procedure
• Arrange for someone to accompany you post-surgery

During the Procedure

The operation, lasting 2.5 to 5 hours, is typically performed under local or general anesthesia. It includes:

• Lifting and tightening the skin and facial muscles (Deep plane face lift)
• Sculpting or repositioning fat in the cheeks and neck
• Removing excess skin and closing the incisions with fine sutures

Types of incisions include:

• Traditional facelift: hairline to behind the ears
• Mini facelift: limited to the hairline and front of the ears
• Neck lift: around the earlobe and under the chin

After the Surgery

You may experience:

• Mild pain or tightness
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Numbness

Most swelling resolves within 15 days to 3 months.

Seek urgent care for:

• Severe unilateral facial pain
• Chest pain
• Irregular heartbeat

Bandages will be applied and may include a drainage tube. You should:

• Keep your head elevated
• Take pain relief as directed
• Use cold compresses to manage swelling

Follow-Up Appointments

1. Next Day – Drainage removal, new dressings
2. One Week – Stitches removed, wound check
3. 1–2 Months – Progress evaluation
