Two Main Types of Genioplasty
1. Advancement Genioplasty

- The surgeon cuts the lower edge of the mandible, advances it by a few millimeters, and stabilizes it using titanium screws.
- For significant projection, Medpor implants or custom porous titanium implants (based on 3D scans) may be used to ensure precision and symmetry.
2. Reduction Genioplasty
Used for chins that are too long or prominent.
- Involves bone reduction by repositioning the lower jaw backward.
Scars can be hidden inside the mouth or under the chin, especially when combined with a neck lift.
Genioplasty in Practice
- A 3D facial scan is required to precisely model the surgery.
- Most procedures are performed under general anesthesia, though local anesthesia with sedation is possible for minor implant placements.
- Pre-anesthesia consultation is mandatory at least 48 hours in advance.
- Typically performed as outpatient surgery (8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, same-day discharge).
- Mild procedures (e.g. implant placement) are usually not painful, while osteotomies may cause noticeable swelling and discomfort for 2–3 days.
