What Is Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that improves both the appearance and function of the upper and/or lower eyelids. It provides a refreshed, rejuvenated look with relatively quick recovery.
Upper Eyelid Surgery:
- Removes excess skin and muscle from the upper lid
- May include removal of fat near the inner eye corner
- A scar is hidden in the natural crease of the upper eyelid
Lower Eyelid Surgery:
- Usually performed via a transconjunctival incision (inside the eyelid), leaving no visible scar
- Targets fat pads that cause under-eye bags
- In cases of muscle laxity, the orbicularis muscle is tightened and stabilized with a canthopexy (temporary fixation)
- For excess skin, a minimal subciliary incision may be used
Procedure Details
- An ophthalmological exam may be required if you have a history of chronic dry eyes
- Most procedures are performed under neuroleptanalgesia (local anesthesia with IV sedation)
- For simpler upper eyelid cases, pure local anesthesia may be used
- General anesthesia is possible based on patient preference
- Same-day discharge: You’ll go home 3 hours after surgery, with a companion
Recovery & Aftercare
- Bruising around the eyes is common for 5 to 15 days
- Arnica is recommended 3 days before surgery to minimize bruising
- Camouflage makeup can be used to mask discoloration during healing
Our Approach to Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty is a delicate procedure that requires precise analysis of eyelid anatomy and individualized treatment plans.
For example:
- If you have hollow eyes, we avoid removing fat and focus on skin tightening
- If your eyelids are heavy, we may remove both fat and muscle
We also frequently combine eyelid surgery with:
- Mini temporal lift (to raise the brow tail)
Facial lipofilling (to restore cheek volume)
Frequently Asked Questions
Will eyelid surgery change my appearance?
No, a well-executed blepharoplasty does not change the expression or personality of your face. It simply gives you a more rested and alert look.
Complications such as lower eyelid retraction (or “round eye”) are rare and preventable.
Are there risks or complications?
- Upper eyelid surgery has a very low complication rate. Rare issues include corneal irritation or erosion.
- Lower eyelid surgery is more delicate. If too much skin is removed, it can lead to eyelid retraction. To avoid this, we:
- Re-tighten the orbicularis muscle
- Secure the lower eyelid cartilage through temporary canthopexy
Are the results long-lasting?
Yes — results are stable over time.
- Lower eyelid fat bags rarely return unless there’s a significant weight change
- Upper eyelid skin may sag again after 10 years due to aging
→ In this case, we may recommend a Mini Temporal Lift to restore brow position and upper facial tension
Is eyelid surgery covered by insurance?
Sometimes, if the procedure is medically necessary, it may be partially reimbursed:
- Dermatochalasis: Upper eyelid skin obstructs vision
- Ptosis: Drooping of the eyelid muscle
- Ectropion: Lower eyelid turns outward and exposes the white of the eye
How much does blepharoplasty cost?
- Upper eyelids (local anesthesia): Starts at €3,500
- Four eyelids (general anesthesia, outpatient): Around €6,500
