Breast implants don’t last forever. Barring any complications, breast implants have an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years, and sometimes even longer. However, over time, certain factors or complications can necessitate premature replacement. Whether for medical or aesthetic reasons, regular follow-up is essential to monitor their condition and prevent any complications.
Why change your breast prosthesis?
Breast implant replacement due to natural wear and aging
Breast implants undergo natural aging, which can affect their integrity. The materials used in their manufacture deteriorate over time, which can lead to rupture, deformation or migration of the prosthesis. This justifies preventive replacement, even in the absence of symptoms.
Implant replacement following complications
Some complications may require early replacement of breast implants, such as capsular contracture (hardening of the capsule around the implant), rupture or leakage of silicone gel, or infection.
Implant replacement for aesthetic reasons
Over time, the shape of the breasts may change due to aging, weight variations, or pregnancy. In these cases, implant replacement may be considered to maintain or improve aesthetic results.
What is the procedure for changing implants?
The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts around 1 to 2 hours. It involves removing the old implants and, if necessary, modifying the breast cavity or performing a breast lift (mastopexy) before inserting the new implants.
What are the post-operative consequences?
Recovery is usually rapid, with little pain. Most patients can resume their daily activities within a few days. As with any surgical procedure, complications are rare but possible.
Does social security cover the cost of replacing breast implants?
If the first breast augmentation was covered for medical reasons (e.g., breast reconstruction after cancer or congenital malformation), social security may cover the cost of implant replacement. For aesthetic reasons, the price is generally not covered.
